Meet the Crafters: Anna Ramsay
Designer Anna Ramsay, known to many by her maiden name, Anna Stowe, is a woman with a lot of bright ideas.
Between designing for corporate and private clients, and collaborating with her husband, Kevin Ramsay, on a line of handmade ceramics, she’s also the brain behind the poster for this year’s Halifax Crafters Society Winter Market.
With the market now in its 10th year of operation, Anna decided to draw on a theme of celebration. “The image of a hand presenting a blooming flower symbolizes the growth of the society and it blossoming into this wonderful, beautiful thing,” says Anna.
“My experience with Halifax Crafters has been fantastic and has set the bar pretty high,” says Anna, when asked what she believes makes this particular market unique. “It is well run, and the atmosphere during the show is very friendly, festive and upbeat. The level of craftsmanship and variety in the vendors, ensured by jury process, are the main praises I hear from the public, along with the free admission.”
Getting to know Anna Ramsay
If you were to describe your work’s personality in 3 words, what would they be?
Hopeful, bright, honest
What is your process?
When I am designing or illustrating I always start with exploration, brainstorming and sketching. After deciding on a direction, I draw or paint the elements then scan them into the computer to colour and/or arrange the composition.

What is your background/How did you get started?
I started at NSCAD looking to focus on painting, but my practical mind steered me to Structural Welding at NSCC. There, I discovered the graphic design program and enrolled. Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with some amazingly talented folks who have all served as mentors along the way.
Collaborating is a huge part of my work. It’s wonderful to see where a project goes when you team up with another mind, since you can never quite predict where it will end up. I am delighted to share news of my most recent collaboration, with my husband, Kevin Ramsay, on a line of handmade ceramics. You can watch the project unfold at www.ramsayceramics.ca or sign up to the mailing list at www.annaramsay.com
Anna, pictured far left, and her husband Kevin, centre, both have studios in their Dartmouth home that they share with their two hounds. “[My studio] has a large drawing desk that overlooks our lush backyard garden, a constant source of inspiration,” says Anna.
What kind of music do you listen to while you work? A film or book you love? What’s your favourite way to procrastinate?
I have been addicted to the Jacky Faber audio book series by L.A. Meyer. The twelfth book has just been released this week! My Back Yard Birding painting series were all painted while listening to these books. I found myself procrastinating from projects at times so I could paint or draw and get lost in the colourful stories.
